📍 Recovery Chip

Your Recovery Chip, Ready From Day One.

It arrives already activated and enrolled in the CarSmarti recovery network. There is nothing to set up, pair, or download — you simply hide it in your vehicle, and we take care of the rest.

ℹ️
The Recovery Chip is a Premium-package component — it is not included with the Preferred package. It is also available as an add-on for additional household vehicles. If you would like to add a Recovery Chip to your plan or to another vehicle, it is handled as a package upgrade — just contact our Sales or Customer Service team at 1-888-992-6659 and we will take care of it.
The Basics

How Your Recovery Chip Works

A small, hidden recovery device that works quietly in the background — managed entirely by CarSmarti, with location access reserved for law enforcement during a reported theft.

Recovery Tool Premium

The CarSmarti Recovery Chip

A compact recovery device that we program, activate, and enroll in our managed recovery network before it ever reaches you — so law enforcement can locate your vehicle during an active, reported theft recovery.

We Set It Up — You Don't Have To

Unlike consumer trackers you buy off the shelf, your CarSmarti Recovery Chip requires no setup on your end. We program and activate every unit here, then enroll it in our recovery network before it ships. There is no app to install, no account to pair, and no settings to configure.

Your chip ships pre-activated. When it arrives, it is already on and already enrolled. All you need to do is choose a good hiding spot in your vehicle and tuck it away. That's it.

How the Location Works

The Recovery Chip reports its position by quietly using the same nationwide signal networks built into the phones and devices already around it every day — the Apple Find My and Android Find My Device networks. As your vehicle passes near these everyday devices, the chip's location is relayed securely back to our recovery network.

Because the chip depends on being within range of those signals, it is best understood as a recovery aid, not a live personal GPS tracker. In areas with very few nearby devices, location updates may be less frequent. In normal day-to-day driving and in populated areas, coverage is strong.

🔒
There is no customer app or personal tracking. The Recovery Chip is for vehicle recovery only. You will not log in to watch its location, and we do not offer personal or real-time tracking. Location is made available to law enforcement only, and only during an active recovery that you have reported — see If Your Vehicle Is Stolen below.

If You Get a "Tracker" Alert on Your Phone, That's Expected

Because the Recovery Chip uses the Find My / Find My Device networks, modern smartphones may notice it traveling with you and show a routine privacy notification. This is completely normal — here is what to do.

📱
You — or a passenger or guest in your vehicle — may see one of these alerts:
  • On an iPhone or iPad: a notification reading "[Item] Found Moving With You", or "Unknown Accessory Detected."
  • On an Android phone: a notification reading "Tracker traveling with you" (from the "Unknown tracker alerts" feature).
This is simply your phone noticing the chip we placed in your own vehicle. It does not mean anything is wrong, and it does not mean someone is tracking you.
🚫
You can safely dismiss the alert — but do NOT disable or turn off the device. These phone alerts will usually offer an option to "disable," "pause," or "stop" the tracker. Please do not use it. Disabling or powering down the chip removes it from our recovery network and defeats its only purpose: helping recover your vehicle if it is ever stolen. Just close or ignore the notification and leave the chip exactly where it is.
👥
Heads-up for passengers, family, and rideshare guests. Anyone who rides with you regularly may see the same notification on their phone. Let them know it is your vehicle's CarSmarti Recovery Chip, that it is expected, and that there is nothing they need to do. They can simply dismiss it.
Setup

Where to Hide It

The single most important thing you can do is pick a good hiding spot. A well-hidden chip is one a thief never finds — and that is what keeps it working for you.

🔎
How to recognize your CarSmarti Recovery Chip. Your device carries the gray CarSmarti steering-wheel emblem on top. That's how you know it's the unit we sent — set it aside somewhere safe until you're ready to place it, then hide it using the guidance below.
✓ Good Hiding Spots
  • Under a seat, tucked into the frame
  • Behind a seat, against the seat back
  • Inside the trunk liner
  • Under the rear cargo mat
  • Behind interior trim panels
  • Tucked above the sun visor mount
✗ Avoid These Spots
  • Glove compartment (first place checked)
  • Center console (second place checked)
  • Door pockets (visible & easy to find)
  • Under the floor mat (loose & obvious)
  • Cupholder or dash tray

Thieves know what a recovery device looks like and where people tend to hide them. The glove compartment and center console are always cleared out first — if your chip is there, it can be tossed before the vehicle even leaves the lot. Pick a spot that's out of sight, secure enough that it won't slide around, and easy for you to remember.

Good to Know

If It Beeps, Don't Worry

A beep from the chip is normal device behavior — not a malfunction and not a sign anything is wrong.

🔔
A short beep is just the chip "waking up." These small recovery devices give a brief beep when they're moved or come back to an active state after sitting still — it's the unit acknowledging activity, exactly as designed. Nothing about the beep changes the chip's enrollment or its ability to help recover your vehicle.

So you know what you're hearing, here's what's normal and what isn't:

What You HearWhat It MeansWhat To Do
A single short beep The chip was bumped or moved and is acknowledging activity ("waking up"). Completely normal. Nothing — this is expected.
An occasional short beep when you drive or move the car Normal background behavior as the device becomes active. Nothing — leave the chip in place.
A long tone, or a repeating sequence of beeps Less common — could mean the device button was pressed or held. Worth a quick check. Call us at 1-888-992-6659 so we can confirm the device status from our end.
Important — Please Don't

Don't Reset It, and Don't Change the Battery

There is one rule that matters more than any other: leave the device alone. Resetting it or changing its battery will unlink it from our recovery network — and that cannot be undone.

🚫
There is a small button on the chip. Please do not press or hold it. The button controls power and reset. The unit ships already powered on and enrolled, so there is no reason to press it. Holding it or pressing it in a certain sequence can power the device off — or reset it out of our network entirely.
🔋
Please do not open the chip or change its battery yourself. The battery and the chip's programming are designed to last about one year from activation, and we replace the unit on an annual cycle to keep everything fresh. Opening the case to swap the battery breaks the link to our recovery network.
⚠️
If the chip is reset or its battery is changed, it can no longer be re-paired to our database — by you or by our team. At that point its recovery coverage ends, and any recovery guarantees or warranties tied to that unit no longer apply. Restoring protection requires a replacement device, which is billable to the customer, because the unit was removed from the recovery network by manual action rather than normal wear. If you think this may have happened, call us right away at 1-888-992-6659 and we'll check the device status and walk you through next steps.
Keeping It Active

Battery Life & Annual Replacement

The Recovery Chip is built to run for about one year from activation on a single battery. Rather than ask you to maintain it, the managed recovery service operates on a simple annual replacement cycle: each year, renewing keeps your chip enrolled, its hardware fresh, and law-enforcement recovery access ready if you ever need it.

When it's time, we'll let you know and handle the swap — you don't need to open the device, track the battery level, or do anything technical. Just keep the chip hidden and let it do its job.

If Your Vehicle Is Stolen

How Recovery Works

You are never on your own. The moment a theft is reported, your CarSmarti recovery advocate goes to work — and the chip's location is coordinated directly with law enforcement.

1
Call our 24/7 hotline: 1-888-992-6659Report the theft and follow the prompts for Vehicle Recovery Services. You'll be assigned a dedicated recovery advocate who stays with your case.
2
File a police reportAn active police report is required to begin recovery. Your advocate will tell you exactly what to provide.
3
We coordinate the chip's location directly with law enforcementWorking from your reported case, CarSmarti shares the recovery location securely with the officers handling it, with manual refreshes for updated positions as the situation develops.
4
Recovery & supportYour advocate stays in the loop with law enforcement, keeps you updated, and helps you through insurance and paperwork until you're back behind the wheel.
🛡️
Recovery, not surveillance. Location access is reserved for law enforcement and is enabled only during an active, reported theft recovery. This is what keeps the service focused on getting your vehicle back — and your day-to-day privacy intact.

Common Questions

Recovery Chip FAQ

Quick answers to the questions we hear most about the Recovery Chip.

Do I need to set up or activate the chip?
No. We program, activate, and enroll every chip before it ships. There's no app, no account, and no pairing. You just hide it in your vehicle.
My phone said an "unknown tracker" or "accessory" is moving with me. Is something wrong?
No — that's expected. Because the chip uses the Find My / Find My Device networks, your phone (or a passenger's) may show "[Item] Found Moving With You," "Unknown Accessory Detected," or on Android "Tracker traveling with you." It's just your phone noticing the chip in your own vehicle. Dismiss the alert, but do not use any option to disable or stop the device.
My Recovery Chip beeped. Did something happen?
A single short beep is just the unit acknowledging that it was moved or bumped — it's normal and changes nothing. If you hear a long tone or a repeating sequence of beeps, call 1-888-992-6659 and we can verify the device status from our end.
What happens if I reset the chip or change the battery?
A reset unit (or one that's had its battery changed) can't be re-added to the CarSmarti recovery network — by you or by us — and its recovery coverage ends. The unit has to be replaced, and replacement is billable to the customer. The battery is designed to last about a year, and we replace the unit annually, so there's no need to open it. If you think this happened, call us right away.
Can I see my vehicle's location in an app?
No. There is no customer app and we don't offer personal or real-time tracking. The chip is for vehicle recovery only — location is shared with law enforcement, and only during an active theft you've reported.
Is the Recovery Chip part of the Preferred package?
No — it's a Premium-package component, and it's also available as an add-on for additional household vehicles. Adding it is a quick package upgrade. Call Sales or Customer Service at 1-888-992-6659 and we'll handle it.
How long does the battery last?
About one year from activation. That's why the managed service runs on an annual cycle — renewal keeps the chip's hardware fresh and its recovery enrollment active. We handle the replacement for you.
Where's the best place to hide it?
Out of sight and secure — under or behind a seat, in the trunk liner, under the rear cargo mat, or behind interior trim. Avoid the glove compartment, center console, door pockets, and cupholders, since those are the first places a thief checks.
